Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon react to their original auditions to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon react to their original Marvel Cinematic Universe auditions on the heels of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s success. The trio was at the center of the latest Marvel Studios and Sony blockbuster as Peter Parker dealt with the ramifications of his superhero persona getting revealed to the public.
But as the first MCU Spider-Man trilogy comes to an end, they look back on getting their journey started in the franchise through their respective audition videos. After Marvel Studios introduced Holland’s Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, he went on to star on his first solo film in Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming from 2017. The film also introduced Zendaya’s Michelle Jones, aka MJ, and Batalon’s Ned Leeds.
Several years later following the arrival and eventual defeat of Thanos (Josh Brolin), the trio reunited in Spider-Man: Far From Home. And in 2021, they assembled for the third time in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The gang has gone through a lot in the last five years, and before they enter a brand new chapter in Spider-Man’s story, they reminisce on how their MCU arcs began.
In celebration of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s arrival on Blu-ray and digital, Holland, Zendaya, and Batalon sit down to react to their original Marvel auditions. For context, Holland was trying out for Joe and Anthony Russo, who cast the actor as the wall-crawler for Captain America: Civil War. Meanwhile, both Zendaya and Batalon were auditioning for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Check out the adorable video below shared by Spider-Man: No Way Home’s official Twitter account.
Holland has extensively talked about the process of being cast as MCU’s Spider-Man before. Aside from his self-tape, the actor also had to screen test with both Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., who were the primary players in Captain America: Civil War. While the web-slinger ultimately only had one scene with Captain America, he developed a close relationship with Iron Man, who became his mentor. Their dynamic is one of the most integral — not to mention the most fun to watch — in the MCU. Off-screen, Holland also became really close with Downey. Meanwhile, it’s safe to say Batalon and Zendaya had to do some testing with Holland since he was already cast as Spider-Man.
As the trio said, this marketing clip was filmed in the middle of Spider-Man: No Way Home’s production, so it’s unclear if they already knew that the blockbuster was going to feature Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, as well as Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina. That being said, it’s clear that they’ve grown so much since they first played their respective Marvel Cinematic Universe roles. Funnily, they capped the whole bit off with a reference to the viral Paul Rudd meme.
