The Queen invited Meghan Markle on her royal train to Chester as her first royal outing without Prince Harry – and the pair seemed to get on splendidly as they said their hellos to well-wishers. The Queen gave Meghan Markle the most touching gift to celebrate their first royal outing together after her wedding to Prince Harry.

In 2018, the Queen invited Meghan to accompany her on a day of royal engagements in Chester. It was the first time the two women are believed to have spent a large chunk of time together, and they were pictured laughing and joking together. The Monarch also invited Meghan to travel to the city with her on the royal train, an honour usually only reserved for senior titles.

The trip would have given the women the opportunity to get to know each other a little better, and hopefully brought them closer together. The day out was not only Meghan’s first engagement with the Queen, it was also her first royal duty without hubby Harry – so it’s likely she was a bit nervous.

So the Queen wanted to mark the day by doing something special for the newest member of her family, and Buckingham Palace revealed the Queen gave Meghan a pair of pearl and diamond drop earrings. Meghan wore the earrings for the day in Chester, and they suited her perfectly. The newly named Duchess of Sussex paired the earrings with a bespoke, oat-coloured Givenchy midi dress, which was designed by Clare Waight Keller, who also made her wedding dress.

The look was completed with a thin black belt that cinched in the dress, black pointy-toed pumps, and a black clutch. She wore her hair loose and opted for a simple makeup look including black eyeliner, and pink lipstick. It’s not confirmed whether the gift was given to Meghan especially for the outing, or if the earrings were a kind ‘welcome to the family’ gesture.

The Queen opted for a bright lime green Stewert Parvin suit for the occasion, which she paired with a Rachel Trevor Morgan hat and a pair of small pearl studs similar to the ones she gifted to Meghan. However, the Queen isn’t the only royal known for her memorable gifts, and Meghan reportedly impressed with her hilarious but thoughtful Christmas present.

Meghan, who was newly engaged to Prince Harry at the time, was tasked with finding the Queen a gift for Christmas. Aware of the rule that royal presents should be cheap and cheeky, Meghan bought something that would not only make her laugh but would delight her dogs too. It was reported that Meghan bought the Queen a singing hamster, which led the monarch to burst out laughing, remarking: “It can keep my dogs company.”
