Like many parents and carers around the world, Prince William and Kate have been facing questions from their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During a visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London this week, William revealed that his youngsters had been discussing the conflict with their friends at school – and that he and Kate felt “useless” amid the crisis.

“Ours have been coming home asking all about it,” the dad-of-three said. “They are obviously talking about it with their friends at school.” He also told volunteers at the social club: “We’re all right behind you. We’re thinking about you. We feel so useless.” The Cambridges made a low-key visit to the centre to talk to volunteers and see the donation boxes that were being packed up to be sent to Ukraine.

William and Kate, who showed their solidarity by wearing Ukraine badges and the Duchess dressing in blue, also brought homemade brownies and granola bars from Kensington Palace for the volunteers. Other members of the royal family have been continuing to demonstrate their support for Ukraine. Prince Charles shared a powerful message with refugees, including people from Ukraine and Afghanistan, during a visit to a church in west London.

“If I may say so, I cannot even begin to imagine the dreadful conditions, the suffering, the agony you have all had to endure on your way to arrive here in this country,” the future King said. His wife Camilla also hosted an International Women’s Day event at Clarence House where she was reunited with Inna Prystaiko, the wife of the Ukrainian ambassador who she embraced last week during a visit to a community centre.

The two ladies spent ten minutes having a personal conversation, with Ms Prystaiko visibly moved throughout the event. It’s also been wonderful to see the Queen back on fitting form following her coronavirus diagnosis. Her Majesty hosted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in person this week while also holding virtual audiences. And she didn’t forget to celebrate her youngest son Prince Edward’s birthday on social media too.
